Five Kinds of Signage

by Harrison James

Graphics or images that give information to viewers can be described as signage, which can be seen everywhere, nowadays, with the help of technology. Without signs, most tourists would get lost; much time, energy and patience would be wasted in finding the way and businesses would not be doing so well either.

Signage is a huge field that includes visuals from street signs to indoor directions and then on to promotional advertisements. Signage is used for numerous items that can have completely different backgrounds. Signage comes under the broad heading of graphic designing. Graphic designing is not the same as fine arts. The classification is necessary because fine artists do not have to convince their clients about their design; on the other hand the priority of the graphic designer is to make sure the client gets what they want. In our case, graphic artists will make sure the target audience understands the purpose behind the designing of the signage.

The most common type of signage is way finding. Way finding includes all directions found at the airports, in hospitals, universities, malls and hotels. The most common examples are the small tablets glued to the doors to indicate where the bathrooms are, as well as the huge number signs opposite most elevator doors, that inform people about the floor that they just landed on.

The second type of signage comes under brand management. This means that a business hires graphic artists that take into account the requirements of the business and research about their target audience. The graphic artists then design a logo or a signature that will represent the business on various items, for example business cards, writing pads or envelopes.

During the launch of advertisement campaigns, businesses also use signage. During the T20 world cup, a Cola company produced a popular campaign that showed Shahid Afridi on the bottle drinking Pepsi. Similar promotional strategies, which are part of advertisements, are also included in signage. This consists of small pamphlet sized hangings on the ceilings of grocery stores that remind customers, in the vicinity, about the product.

Street signs are informative and precise when it comes to signage, because people read them on the go. So, there is no room to confuse the viewers by adding unnecessary graphics. Although bright flashes of neon lights may blind you at one point or another when you go down the streets of New York at night, these signs compete with others to attract the attention of the general population.

Apart from the usual signage, businesses might want to have exclusive signage. For that, they will order specific signage that meets their requirements. Hence, exclusively made signage is called custom made signage. It might differ from the ordinary ones as it is tailor-made to suit the requirements of the client.

Signage is the most popular form of graphic design around the world. If the designers are successful then the business will see a huge boost in their revenue and hence, further on an increase in their profits.
